Photographers Craig and Jamie will challenge students on basic composition, starting with the question what makes a good image? Students can expect to gain new insight for photographing everyday subject matter and people, and learn how to create a narrative in their work. With Craig and Jamie’s instruction, students will learn to expand their photographic knowledge in the field. By first sitting through a series of lectures about specific photographic techniques, students will later apply the information in the field, and have hands-on learning in a later critique. In addition, students can expect to hone their creative skills and learn to create dynamic compositions, and will gain a hands-on experience photographing visually stunning images in a small town environment. The skills students will learn will allow for better, more interesting photography in any given situation.

The topics covered in this workshop are:

Visual Storytelling – Telling stories through images means capturing important moments of a subject’s life and accurately conveying their environment. It also means being one with your gear – ISO, WB, aperture and shutter speed should be second nature, as should using ambient light, and attaining wide, medium, and tight/long lens shots. Visual storytelling doesn’t necessarily mean you must be literal – subtle images often have more impact than cookie cutter ones, and we’ll show you examples of this. Capturing the emotions of subjects and summoning emotion from viewers are the two most important aspects of telling stories through images.

Long-term Projects – Spending long periods of time with a subject is both wonderful and difficult for a photographer. It’s important to let go of preconceived ideas of where we think a story might go, or how we hope it might end. It’s also important to, on occasion, put down our cameras and listen – listening gains trust, as do honesty and genuineness. Listening also helps a photographer know what moments/photos to look for in the future. Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Craig F. Walker, will present his winning photo essays, “Ian Fisher: American Soldier,” and “Welcome Home, The Story of Scott Ostrom,” and will discuss the importance of patience, flexibility and compassion when it comes to long-term projects.

Photographing Strangers – For most people, approaching strangers is hard enough to do without a camera. This lecture will provide tips and tricks of the trade on how to photograph someone you’ve never met, in places you’ve never been. We’ll also talk about model releases, ethics, photographing stranger’s children, and getting names.
